Over 4,000 fans gathered in Leicester Square Tuesday
night for the première of the film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.
The leading lady, Angelina Jolie, greeted the crowds together with
her father Jon Voight (who plays Lara's dad) and husband Billy Bob
Thornton. Angelina's brother James also joined the family for the
screening at the Empire Cinema.
Angelina said she was pleased and reassured by
the overwhelming turnout. Like Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones's
Diary) before her, she had been concerned at how audiences would
react to an American actress playing an English character.
The actress shrugged off poor reviews for Lara
Croft: Tomb Raider , which is based on the best-selling series
of Tomb Raider computer games. Her father Jon Voight, who
is currently starring as President Roosevelt in Pearl Harbor,
said he was very proud of his daughter's performance: "It gives
her a chance to show off all that stuff I knew about when she was
growing up, all the athletics she was good at school," he said.
Guests at the opening included All Saint Natalie
Appleton and her daughter Rachel, who plays the young Lara Croft
in the film. EastEnders' Martin Kemp, socialite Jemima Khan, and
the Spice Girls' Mel C also attended.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider opens at cinemas
nationwide on Friday 6 July.
