The circus comes to… Trafaglar Square? 11/09/01

Roll up to Trafalgar Square this Wednesday evening for the second installment of five Wednesday evening performances happening as those last summer evenings gradually fade away. Tomorrow night is Circus on the Square. Read on for the remaining programme…

Circus on the Square
Wednesday 12 September 2001
4.30pm - dusk
Forget the big top, roll up to Trafalgar Square for one evening only of the best of contemporary circus. The Velayev Family from Azerbaijan will defy gravity five metres above your head, whilst British circus performers the Heir of Insanity perform on the trapeze. Back on the ground will be the excellent juggling of John Teesdale.

Udichi
Wednesday 19th September 2001
6-8.30pm
The East End based Bangladeshi arts and cultural organisation Udichi Shilpi Gosthi will bring some of Bangladesh's top performers to the Square, including the singers Gopal Das and Kangalini Sufia. Classical and folk dancing, tabla, sitar, flute, dhul and tanpura will give a taste of the vibrancy of Brick Lane's Bangladeshi community right in the heart of London.

Trafalgar Beats
Wednesday 26th September 2001 6-9pm
The square will resound to rhythm in every shape and form. Sister India, a collective of performers led by cutting edge DJ Ritu will cross the boundaries between eastern and western music traditions. Toe-tapping rhythm will emanate from leading tap-dancers Tobias Tak and Junior Laniyan. A Latin flavour will be lent to the proceedings by the Samba rhythms of Inner Sense, and the fantastic drumming of the Dhol Foundation will be accompanied by the 4 x 4 dancers.

Trafalgar Voices
Wednesday 3rd October 2001 6:30-9pm
A celebration of Londoners, this event will showcase the talents of amateur and professional performers from all over London. The finale will draw together several community choirs, each performing their favourite songs before the massed voices join together for a specially commissioned work by acclaimed singer-songwriter Brenda Rattray. Avanti Display will transform the fountains of Trafalgar Square in a way that has never been seen before.
