Garrick Theatre in West End
The Garrick Theatre - history
The Garrick theatre was designed in 1889 by Emden and Phipps and is named after David Garrick, the most celebrated actor of the 18th Century.
Garrick was also co-manager of the Drury Lane Theatre, and a dramatist himself, favouring farce and comedy.
It is fitting therefore that the Garrick Theatre is well known for it’s love of farce and comedy and has long been associated with such plays.
Notable success have included A Pair of Spectacles, The Merry Wives of Windsor and No Sex Please, We’re British. A resident ghost has always been the watermark of a genuine, good old theatre, and the Garrick is no exception.
In the early 1900’s the theatre’s lessee had a room at the top of a flight of stairs that led directly from the stage.
His ghost is said to sometimes descend this phantom staircase to tap the actors on the shoulder.
